Fun activities and trips for winter staycation

Skip to:

Many people complain about the cold weather. Even Canadians who are used to the freezing temperatures.

Instead of complaining, why not embrace it? One way to do that is by enjoying a winter staycation. Whether it be a weekend getaway or a day of exploring the city, there’s lots you can look forward to this winter.

Here are some tips on how you can have a fun staycation in Manitoba:

  1. Be prepared

For staycations near and far, it’s important to be prepared. If you’re going on a road trip, here are some things to consider:

    • Make sure to pack lots of snacks. Having snacks can save you a lot of time and money. You won’t have to stop at restaurants along the way, or at least minimize it. Some restaurants might not even be open if you’re driving through the night.
    • Plan some stops ahead of time for bathroom and stretch breaks. These quick stops will keep everyone comfortable and energized throughout the trip. It’s also important to research where the gas stations will be along the way. You don’t want to be low on gas if there are no gas stations nearby.
    • Get your car checked before you leave. Ensure that your headlights, brake lights, and turn signals are working properly. If you’re traveling with kids, you can involve them by teaching them about car and road safety.
    • If it’s almost time to get your oil changed, do it before you leave.
    • Prepare an emergency kit in your car. A basic emergency kit should include:
      • Food
      • Water
      • A blanket
      • Extra warm clothing
      • A first-aid kit
      • A shovel, scraper, and snowbrush
      • Roadmaps
      • A whistle
      • Jumper cables
  2. Check out something new

When life gets busy, there isn’t always time to take advantage of the many things your city has to offer. A staycation is the perfect time to check off some of these places on your list. There’s lots to see and do this winter in Manitoba. Here are some places worth checking out:

    • Nestaweya River Trail: Did you know that Winnipeg has one of the world’s longest naturally frozen skating trails? The trail is at The Forks and goes along the Red and Assiniboine Rivers. Rent ice skates at The Forks or buy a cheap pair from Canadian Tire. If skating is not your thing, take a walk on the path next to the skating trail. Stop at the warming huts along the river and enjoy the beautiful views of the city. Check out The Forks website for skating trail and park conditions before you go.
    • Snow Maze: Located on St. Mary’s Road just 10 minutes outside the city, you will find the world’s largest snow maze. Try finding your way out of the maze. Then, take your toboggan and go down the snow mountain. Check out the snow bar or warm up by the firepits with some hot chocolate. This is a great place to take your entire family or to enjoy a date night out.
    • FortWhyte Alive: Spend time in nature at FortWhyte Alive. You can take a walk on one of their many trails or try out cross-country skiing, snowshoeing, or tobogganing. They also have an interpretive center where you can learn about sustainability and wildlife.
    • Thermea Nordik Spa: If you’re looking for a relaxing staycation, Thermea is a great option. Most popular in the winter, this outdoor spa offers warm outdoor pools, saunas, steam rooms, and a cold plunge (if you dare). The spa recommends you follow the thermal cycle. This is a heat therapy treatment where you go from hot to cold temperatures and end with rest. This releases adrenaline and increases your heart rate.
    • The Mere Hotel: If you need a change in scenery, booking a hotel is a no-stress way to have a relaxing weekend. The Mere Hotel is located right downtown and is a close walking distance to the Exchange District. In the winter, you’re also steps away from the Nestaweya River Trail.
  3. Go to Manitoba’s mountain

There is no need to go far to have a mountain holiday. You can go on a short road trip right here in Manitoba to Riding Mountain National Park. Although there’s no mountain or skiing, you can still have a fun cozy holiday in the snow. Here’s a guide to vising Riding Mountain National Park:

    • Where to stay: There are many places to stay. The Elkhorn Resort is a popular option. Close to Clear Lake, this hotel has many amenities and is great for families. If you want to stay in a cabin, go on the Parks Canada website to rent an oTENTik. This is an A-frame cabin that fits about six people.
    • What to do: First, head to the Parks Canada visitor center to learn about the region. Talk to the park interpreters for ideas of things to do. Then, head out to try some cross-country skiing. If cross-country skiing is not your thing, drive through the Lake Audy Bison Enclosure. This is one of the best places to see bison roaming freely on the Fescue Grasslands. End the day by walking through the town of Wasagaming. Visit the Lakehouse restaurant for some delicious comfort food. They also have The Spruce Hut which serves coffee and pastries.
