What you need to know about the Manitoba Family Affordability Package

Have you heard about the Family Affordability Package? It’s a Manitoba Government initiative that was recently launched to provide “immediate, direct relief to help families make ends meet.”

What is the Family Affordability Package?

This program is part of the provincial government’s efforts to help ease the burden of rising costs and high inflation on Manitobans. Manitoba is experiencing the second highest inflation rate among the provinces.

The initiative will provide benefit cheques to families and seniors, benefit increases for Manitobans on Employment and Income Assistance (EIA), and temporary funding for community organizations that provide food to Manitobans in need (food banks).

What are these benefits?

For families – Families that have a household income of less than $175,000 (in 2021) and have children under the age of 18 will receive $250 for the first child and $200 for each additional child under 18 years old. This benefit is a refundable tax credit and will not be taxable.

For seniors –Seniors (aged 65 or older) with a family income of less than $40,000 who claimed the Education Property Tax Credit for Seniors in their 2021 tax return will receive $300. This benefit is also a refundable tax credit and is not taxable.

For Manitobans on EIA – EIA general assistance clients without dependent children will receive an extra $50 per adult each month. All EIA disability clients will receive an additional $25 per household each month. This starts in October 2022 for the month of November.

For food banks – A temporary grant program called the Food Security Fund will be available to not-for-profit organizations that address food insecurity to help them meet growing demands for their services.

How will we receive this benefit? Do we have to apply?

Families and seniors do not need to apply. Cheques will be mailed based on their 2021 tax return.

Those who have moved and changed their address since they filed their return must update their address. They can complete the online form before Monday, September 19, 2022.

Community food banks can apply for funding by completing an application form by September 21, 2022. Grant recipients will be announced in October 2022.

When will we receive the benefit?

Cheques will be mailed to individuals and families in the fall of 2022 (late September).
