Step 2

Listen to a conversation between Syd and Len.

Step 3

Read the following dialogue to see the idioms in context:

Syd:Hey honey, you look exhausted. How was your day?
Len:Not great. The new boss at work is difficult to deal with. He always wants to call the shots.
Syd:Oh, is he one of those “my way or the highway” types?
Len:Yeah, exactly. I really miss my previous boss. She always welcomed the teams’ ideas and opinions. Eventually I think I am going to have to draw a line in the sand if things keep going this way…
Syd:What do you mean? Are you thinking of quitting? You’re almost ready for retirement
Len:Yeah, it is overwhelming. I am taking directions from everyone. I feel like they bulldoze me to get the work done.
Syd:Well the next time you think he is being unfair, don’t be afraid to put him in his place. I’ve worked with bosses like him before, so I know what they are like.
Len:Yeah, you’re right. I’ve been there long enough. It’s time to speak up.
