Syd:Hi, Len! How are you doing? How is your family?
Len:Hi, Syd! I’m doing fine! My sister is a bit upset, though.
Syd:What’s wrong?
Len:Well, I don’t think it’s a big problem, but my sister disagrees. Her daughter, my niece, has expressed her desire to become an actress and my sister doesn’t like that. She is worried that unless my niece is a super star she will be grasping at straws trying to make a living this way. It is a profession that offers no security in life, in her opinion.
Syd:Oh, I see! I get it why your sister is worried. Acting could be a difficult career path. So, what is her suggestion?
Len:Well, she is trying to talk my niece out of it, to nip the idea in the bud, so to speak.
Syd:I understand. As a mother, she is worried for the future of her child. I know I wouldn’t be able to make my parents agree with a career choice similar to that. I would simply be barking up the wrong tree if I tried to convince my father to support my ambitions to be an actor or a photographer, or anything like that. He is a very practical person.
Len:Practical skills provide more security, that’s a fact. By the way, do you remember the old man who lived next door when we were kids? He was an actor.
Syd:Yes, I remember him.
Len:Apparently, he had been homeless before he died.
Syd:Oh, I didn’t know he’s been pushing up the daisies for a while.
Len:For 5 years now, actually. Anyway, I’m going to hit the hay now. I’ve been very busy and need some rest.
Syd:Sure! I hope your sister and niece resolve the situation soon and come to an agreement on your niece’s career choice.
Len:Absolutely! See you, Syd.
