Did you know that reading can help you become good at speaking a language? It’s a great way to learn quickly and easily.

Reading is better than watching TV or movies if you want to learn a language. Here’s why:

  • You can learn more words and grammar
  • You’ll be able to use the language better when you talk
  • You can understand the language better

Reading helps us become more familiar with the language. We can remember words better when we see them in sentences. It’s even better when we look up words in the dictionary. This is called intensive reading.

3 Steps to get into the reading habit:

  1. Pick something you like

Choose something that you enjoy. It could be a book, news article, poem, short story, or graphic novel. Start with shorter pieces and then move on to longer ones.

  2. Choose something that fits you

Look for reading materials that are at your language level. You can find websites that have items written in different levels of difficulty.

  4. Ask for help

If you need help, don’t be afraid to ask. Your librarian or ESL teacher can help you find the best materials for you.

  5. Read at the same time every day

Try to read at the same time each day. But don’t do it too close to bedtime. If you’re busy, take a 10-15 minute break to read. Make it more enjoyable by getting a cup of tea or coffee and finding a comfortable and quiet spot.

  6. Join a reading club

If you don’t like reading by yourself, join a reading or book club. It’s a great way to stay interested in the material and have fun. You’ll also get to meet new people and practice talking with them.

Live&Learn has two reading clubs. One is for short stories and the other is for books. To find out when the clubs meet, check our Events Calendar. You can register online or email us at info@myenglisholine.ca for more details.

Have a wonderful time reading!
