Volunteering is part of Canadian culture

Volunteering is common in Manitoba. It is a good way to help others while learning new skills. You also make new friends and boost your confidence.

Where to volunteer:

  1. Your church or community centre

    Start with your church or community centre. Your church needs greeters, readers, office helpers or catechism teachers. Coach, coordinate activities or do office work for your centre. It is the fastest way to know your neighbours and make friends.

  2. How to volunteer: Read community bulletins and announcements. Visit your community centre. Talk to your parish priest, minister or church leader. Ask how you can help.
    You may need: A Child Abuse Registry Check.

  3. Your child’s school

    Volunteer to help in after-school events. Offer to be a lunch monitor or chaperone for a field trip if you have more time.

  4. How to volunteer: Talk to your child’s teacher or principal. Offer to volunteer.
    You may need: To bring baked goods or supplies for events. Some activities just need you to be there to watch the kids. Help out in minor tasks.

  5. Immigrant associations or settlement organizations

    Being an immigrant will help you in this type of work. Speaking another language and knowing their needs are important. Help in literacy or cultural programs. Volunteer to translate documents or become a teacher’s assistant for English (or another language). You can also welcome clients or answer the telephone.

  6. How to volunteer: Visit the websites of immigrant associations or settlement organizations like IRCOM, Immigrant Centre, or English Online.

  7. Your advocacy or favorite charitable institution

    Volunteer at a local pet rescue shelter if you like taking care of animals. You can also go to the Humane Society. Volunteer at Winnipeg Harvest to serve the needy. Volunteer with ACI Manitoba if you like the arts.
